Radio Pranks and Practical Jokes - How Far is Too Far?

Pranks Gone Bad
Most of us have fallen victim to a few pranks pulled on us by friends or family members, from time to time. My kids have inherited my sense of humor (I’m still trying to figure out if that is a good thing. LOL) and have played plenty of practical jokes on me, but that is for another hub. In this article, however, my focus will be on the ramifications of when a joke can be taken too far.

Television, Internet and Radio Getting In On the Action
Bored? Need to be entertained for awhile? Or maybe you’ve had a long day at work and just want the luxury to sit and relax for awhile. Whatever it may be, we can find just about anything nowadays in this technical advanced society we live in today. Between endless channels to flip through on the television to the internet and radio stations we have available to us, we are never hard-pressed for entertainment.
In recent years, there have been quite a few shows made where their primary focus is playing pranks on innocent people. MTV is one of many, who have aired shows like this. Scared Tactics, Pranked, and Punk’d to name a few. Almost everyone has seen Ashton Kutchers’ show, “Punk’d.” Ashton chooses unsuspecting celebrities to play cruel, yet funny, pranks on. From Beyonce who thought she ruined Christmas for needy children to actors having their $200,000 cars stolen, they all fell victim to Ashton’s practical jokes. Extremely funny, well thought out, and none of the victims or their property are harmed in any way.
Now enter the internet, where you can type just a few keywords and find just about anything you are looking for. The internet allows people to download music, movies, post pictures and videos. Most people use YouTube when they want to search for certain clips or videos. People upload videos daily to this site and you can just about imagine how many videos are uploaded that involves people being pranked. Some are extremely funny, while others are disgusting and just plain mean. Radio stations are the next to get in line, holding competitions to win tickets to concert and sports events, along with cash drawings. Below is an example of a prank gone bad.
Radio Station Giving Out Free Kayne West Tickets
A woman calls in to a radio station trying to win tickets for a Kanye West concert. In order to win these tickets, the radio announcer tells her the she must call her husband and tell him that their 9 year old son is not his, but in order for her to win, the wife must get her husband to say, “Its okay, I still love you.” (screeching brakes) What!? I don’t know about any of you, but I don’t need tickets that bad to ANY concert, to justify playing a cruel joke like that on my partner. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know what the outcome of this will be. This scenario has disaster written all over it.
The radio announcer continues to explain all the rules, no texting her husband to give him a heads up, it has to be believable, and bottom line he has to say, “Its okay, I still love you.” With a few sighs and some time to think about whether or not she can pull this off, she takes the bait.
The rest of the story unfolds like this; woman calls husband, butters him up with, “How’s your day? Mine’s good. Do you have time to talk? I have something I need to get off my chest that has been bothering me and I just want to be honest in our relationship. You know how much I love you, right?” The egg is planted. You can literally go through all the emotions with him, as his wife continues to tell the story. His entire life is beginning to unravel before him. You can hear confusion, hurt, and anger in his voice. Sad, really. We are all in on the joke and he hasn’t got a clue. I feel sorry for him and feel the need to save him, but I can’t do anything but mutter, “oh my gawd’s,” at the computer, while covering my mouth in disbelief.
With each second that passes on the clock, he becomes angrier, until he suddenly has a clear vision. (It’s really weird, you can actually hear and visualize how our mind works, and takes control to protect us during times like this.) The husbands’ whole demeanor changes and he states in a sarcastic, calm voice to his wife, “Well, since we are getting things off our chest and we want to be completely honest with each other, I have something to tell you.” Almost instantly, the wife starts backpedaling, “Hon, just wait! Wait!” The husband ignores her desperate pleas and states matter-of-factly, “I’ve been screwing your sister for the last year!” You can hear the wife and the guys from the radio station trying to frantically sort everything out.
Who’s at fault? The radio station for trying to keep their ratings up? The wife who just wanted tickets to see her favorite artist perform? Or, the husband who was the victim throughout all of it, until the very end when he disclosed he had been cheating? I’ll let you be the judge.
I’ll be the first to admit that I am easily annoyed by people who don’t take the time to think things through. Must be time for a cup of coffee. Is it sick to put Teddy Grahams in your coffee, just to watch them drown? Hehehe

Such "practical jokes" on TV, radio and YouTube take advantage of the public's inability to look away from a train wreck in progress. I used to listen to a radio station in KC MO that during morning drive time ran a segment similar to the one you describe above. More often than not with similar tragic results. Could I hit the "off" button or switch stations during this segment? Of course not.
But it's not just situations posed as "jokes" on others. I'm sure we've all heard of the radio station (in the SF Bay area, if memory serves) that offered a large cash prize to the person who could drink the most water in a specified amount of time without going to the bathroom. The woman who "won" literally drowned from the inside. Afterward, the DJs running the contest said they had "no idea" such a thing could happen. Apparently the woman who died didn't either.
I admit that when seeing this kind of entertainment will surely makes me giggle and horrified when terrible things happened.
If this happens to me, I know I'm gonna be upset and that prankster would be in trouble. LOL. OR I would rather ignore my friends' pranks and go away.
'Tis a terrible thing - greed.
LOL @ drowning Teddy Grahams. And yes, I think it may be sick. Funny, but sick. As for pranks, little ones that are harmless and the victim can laugh too, sure. But humiliation is not cool. And that deal you described on the radio show is just way over the line. Maybe that's just how karma works though. People like that create the situation that bites them back... all of them.
Interesting story! Some practical jokes are funny others are not so much. Depends on the degree I guess. Thanks for sharing the story!
Is it sick to put Teddy Grahams in your coffee, just to watch them drown? Hehehe
HAHAHAHA that made me laugh. No its not sick, if the only casualty of a rough day is a few teddy grahams, then it could be worse! Pranks are very near and dear to me. Once my boyfriend asked me to wash his back when he was in the tub (i hate when he asks me to so that, the bathroom is for one person at a time!) So, i told him to hang on a minute, and when i came back, i washed his back while placeing one of those food color gel caps in the tub. before he knew what hit him he was bathing in midnight blue water! He dosnt aske me to wash his back anymore... Harmless pranks that dont hurt anyone are ok. i never liked that blazing dog shit on the porch thing, thats just dangerous. And people that play pranks publically, like on their spouse over the radio, i think thats over the line, but hey, we all have a different line, right? Awesome hub blades!
Bladesofgrass, I've actually seen this type of joke played out to disastrous results also. Do these people have no pride! I, too, like a good practical joke, but not to that extent. Very good hub, looking forward to reading more.
Haha, well it wont be me babe! - unless its in a diaper or batheing in kitty litter! Anyway, mix it up. Feeling a little angry? bite the heads off of some gummy bears! Your idea is definately the passive version of the voodoo doll! By the way, i emailed nj quit hotline, and there going to send me a book full of distractions from smoking, and a hotline to call at 2 am when i "just cant handle it man...!" lol
I love practical jokes, as long as no one gets hurt!
Really good hub, especially those little bears and their horrible demise:) As for the radio 'joke', it is definitely a slow train wreck but isn't it weird that people can't seem to turn away? It reminds me of when you find something that smells disgusting and everyone else has to smell it too.
its all fun and games till someone loses an eye...Thats what mom used to say and ya know what she was right....
Pranks are good when they are not so big and not so personal... I used to prank my manager I did a dead on impersonation of my boss whp pwned 2 reataurants and one day I called my managr and asked him to bring a bunch of atuff over to the other place and I called my manager did the impersonation and when my manager showed up the owner thought he went looney. I eventually got fired but not from that prank. hehe
That radio thing...wow. Although, and this is going to sound heartless (MUWAH-HA-HA-HA-HA!!!..sorry), but anyone who wants Kanye West tickets THAT badly? Kanye? Seriously? I can't find it in my heart to have any personal sympathy. I do feel bad that it turnoud out as it had, don't get me wrong, but...Kanye? Nope...I've got nothing.
Okay...I'll bite but did you ever learn how things turned out for him and her? Just curious. Great articcle and playing small pranks is one thing...wrecking folks marriages is just sick.
Yea, I'm pretty sure they didn't but then again, maybe after they appeared on Jerry Springer they were able to reconcile their differences. LOL...I still can't believe he was sleeping with her sister. yuck...
I don't even want to read this, it sounds so mean. yuk
I heard this prank on YouTube. What you do have to take into consideration is that many of the radio show pranks are staged. If it was real and taped prior to airing then both the husband and wife would have needed to give their consent to have have it aired. If it was sold to the public as "on air" prank, then you have to realize that you can't put a person live on the radio unless you tell that person they are live on the radio.
I wonder what happened after that. If he really was doing what he said - then it's best it all came out. Neat article and the pic of the puppy is priceless.
I was just wondering what your thoughts were about my comment?
Actually radio stations are not allowed to put people on the air without without letting them know they are on the air and they can't broadcast a prerecorded pranks without consent from all parties.

What a horrible prank! I don't care what they are giving away, it would not be worth lying to your spouse.
